China Education Daily: New Agricultural Science "Hand in Hand" New Engineering
Date:April 20, 2022 View:

News from our newspaper (Correspondent Yajing Gao, reporter Zhaosheng Chu) “Undergraduate students can enjoy the one-to-one scientific research tutor system and get personalized guidance in scientific research training, which is particularly attractive to me.” Recently, Jiangsu University announced the result of the second phase of the “Gao Liangrun” experimental class. Jiarong He, a 2020-class undergraduate student majoring in agricultural electrification, was excited and nervous about his successful selection. “It is not a small academic challenge for me to learn artificial intelligence, intellectual property management, and other courses beyond planning, and also to produce high-quality scientific research and innovation results”, says He.

The establishment of the new agricultural science “Gao Liangrun” top-notch talent experimental class to promote the cultivation of elite talents with diversified agricultural and industrial integration is a microcosm of Jiangsu University's exploration of new agricultural-related talent training paths in recent years. The fast-growing future of agriculture has put forward higher requirements for agriculture-related colleges and universities. Jiangsu University, which is known for its agricultural engineering disciplines, takes the initiative to recognize changes and respond to changes. The new paradigm of engineering and agriculture-related professional training based on “strengthening agriculture with industry and reviving agriculture with integration” has been established.

The Romance of Fluid Mechanics

At Jiangsu University, the composition contest of poetry and painting on fluid mechanics, held for three consecutive years, is an emotional engineering “classroom”.

“The head of Dujiangyan, the hit of the torrent, the water reservoir driving great power” In the contest in March this year, Haolin Cai and Yunhan Geng, undergraduates of Class 2020 from the school of energy and power engineering, composed a poem to explain the basic principles of three main projects of Dujiangyan. From poetry, calligraphy, and painting to short video production, “Poem and Distance” among 102 works from 21 colleges and universities has been praised by many teachers and students.

“Fluid mechanics, which studies the effects and laws of flow, involves many abstract concepts and complex theories and is difficult to understand. It is recognized as a difficult course to learn.” Says Xiaoying Wang, associate professor at the school of energy and power engineering. “Based on our traditional culture, the romantic way can ignite the enthusiasm of students to explore the laws of fluid flow, make teachers change from knowledge imparters to learning guides, and students from passive recipients of knowledge to active explorers.”

Construct China's agricultural machinery culture exhibition hall and agricultural equipment documentation resource center, hire Yafu Zhao, a national model for poverty alleviation, to regularly have the course of devotion to being in rural areas and enriching farmers with science and technology for agriculture-related students, and hold Lei Si international forum and agriculture-related academician forum every year... As one of the national comprehensive reform pilot universities for “Three-wide Education”, Jiangsu University has always followed the concept of “ideological and political +” and integrated the education of “knowing agriculture, loving agriculture, and serving agriculture” into the disciplines, teaching, textbooks, and management systems of agriculture-related majors. The university continuously enhances students’ sense of mission and responsibility of serving “agriculture, rural areas, and farmers” and the modernization of agriculture and rural areas.

Promote the Integration of New Engineering and New Agricultural Sciences

Looking at the transcripts of the students of the first “Gao Liangrun Class”, the contest experience in mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, and other disciplines has reached more than 90%, with nearly 40 national and provincial science competitions or scientific research achievements.

Every year, Zhong Tang, the head teacher of the “Gao Liangrun Class” and an associate researcher at the school of agricultural engineering, digs out “good seedlings” among the first-year freshmen and guides students to participate in various science competitions. “Agriculture needs everyone to integrate across borders to complete in the future, which requires students to have a more solid foundation in science and engineering.” Zhong Tang says.

Every year, 20 sophomore students majoring in agriculture are selected, and experts with deputy senior titles or above are selected “one-to-one” to provide scientific research and innovation guidance. A maximum of 40000 yuan in scientific and technological achievements will be set up... In addition to the newly developed “experimental field” for talent training, how should agriculture-related majors be transformed and upgraded? At Jiangsu University, the specialized courses of agricultural-related students are being “overweighted”, and the knowledge system is also being “reorganized”.

“One of our biggest advantages is that the disciplines are relatively complete, so we can meet the needs of new discipline construction through internal interdisciplinarity.” Hongli Xue, deputy director of the academic affairs office, believes that modern agricultural construction is a huge systematic project that requires a lot of innovative engineering and technical talents. Traditional agriculture-related majors are mostly set up according to the division of production, which are isolated from each other. With the development of society, they have gradually failed to keep up with the pace of the development of modern agriculture. However, the distinctive specialty of educational models “agriculture in industry and industry supports agriculture” at Jiangsu University brings great opportunities for resource integration and optimization
